Levels
Want a quick overview of all 5 Levels?
Continuing with the internship dynamic of Level 4, Level 5 takes the next logical step and trains people how to teach the Level 3 and 4 courses.
This is where the multiplication starts to happen. Level 5 graduates are referred to as “SOWERS Trainers of Trainers.” These are fruitful, reliable church leaders on a regional or national level.
There are three divisions within the SOWERS method. The first two Levels are the foundation – learn how to minister and lead in open air meetings. The next two Levels equip people to teach the first two Levels. And the last Level trains them to teach Levels 3 and 4.
So, in a typical Level 1 course, it is common to see a Level 3 and a Level 5 in the room. The Level 3 is teaching it, and the Level 5 is observing the Level 3. Likewise, during a Level 2 course, a Level 4 teaches it, and a Level 5 observes and trains the instructor.
Level 5 Testimony – Overcoming Opposition
I started SOWERS in 1995 and I was trained at Level 5 in 2014. In SOWERS I have found boldness in witnessing despite opposition. My prayer life has changed to become consistent. I have developed a sense of devotion in the Word of God. My teaching has impacted many whom I have taught. Their lives have changed and many have become involved in the SOWERS ministry. -Asford C, Zambia

Firmly Planted Church Leaders
If you’ve ever done any sort of ministry, you know that the leaders often grow more than the people under their care. One reason for this is because – they need it!
In addition to training new leaders to teach the Level 3 course, Level 5 can also include a variety of other trainings, such as marriage counseling, time management, and parenting. This is all to help the Level 5 be established firmly in their faith so they can be effective ministers of the gospel.
Level 5 Fast Facts
Who attends:
Any Level 4 Sower who shows the potential to teach and arrange Level 3 seminars. There is a natural progression here. After teaching enough Level 2 courses, the Level 4 will begin attending and working with Level 3 classes. Eventually, they begin teaching them under supervision to reach Level 5.
Who teaches:
The Level 5 Sowers administer the Level 5 training. Ideally, there will be someone from that nation who can teach this, but if no one is yet at Level 5 in that nation, someone will be brought in, or the Regional Director will do it. For example, three of the East African nations have their own Level 5 Sowers. But currently, none of the Asian nations do.
How long it takes:
The bulk of the work happens organically over several months. Level 4’s just start working with the Level 3 courses while another Level 5 teaches them. At some point, when deemed ready to become Level 5 Trainers, the Level 5 Sower will show up to assess their readiness to teach it themselves.
From that point, it takes about 6 days, not all in a row. One day is for learning the Level 3 training materials. Then, teaching the Level 3 course takes 3 days. Finally, the Level 3 graduates have to be assessed on their own Level 1 teaching.
What they learn:
They learn how to teach the Level 3 course.
Other than that, a lot of this depends on the needs of the minister. As you read up above, part of this is about building up the church leader to strengthen their own walk with God. This can include conferences, retreats, and specific seminars.
The goal is more leadership. Level 5’s often become Area Supervisors, managing the ministry in their region or nation. In Biblical times, Level 5 Sowers would be like apostles, overseeing ministries they and others have planted, as well as starting new ones.
Level 5 Testimonies
Kenya – Empowering Churches for Evangelism
Level Four helped know how organize seminars and how to approach pastors and promote the SOWERS Program to them.
SOWERS has helped me to discover my gift as an evangelist.
SOWERS has helped me to have a heart to care for believers.
When I was trained at Level Five my vision was expanded as I now knew how to empower more churches in evangelism and to raise up leaders to move on with the SOWERS Program.
I have been in different forums of training on evangelism but SOWERS surpasses them all. It is unique as it helps all the church to get involved in evangelism. SOWERS helps the body of Christ to understand and know the gospel and share it. It helped me to grow in the area of maintaining my preaching and teaching the true gospel.

Want a quick overview of all 5 Levels?
The first three Levels are mostly classroom-based courses, with hands-on ministry training as part of the program. But they take only a few days each to complete.
From this point on, the remaining Levels are more like internships. Students are out in the ministry field gaining experience and learning new things under supervision. They are now planting churches, building ministries, and exercising godly spiritual authority to win people for Christ.
The goal of Level 4 is to train ministers to teach the Level 2 course, which is probably the Level most at the heart of SOWERS open air evangelism methodology since it’s the one that equips new open air ministry leaders. The people teaching the Level 2 course have to be strong in the Lord.
The jump from Level 3 to Level 4 is a big one – the commitment level increases.
Level 4 Testimony – Equipped to Teach
[The Program] has also helped me to teach at Bible School and has also helped my house to be in prayers every day. It has also helped me on how to prepare the Bible Teachings. -Reuben K, Zambia

Building Their Ministry
A Level 4 graduate will need support because they are now devoting the majority of their time to spreading the gospel in their nation. Ideally, they are supported through their own local church. Sometimes though, if their church can’t afford it, they get support from the SOWERS ministry funds.
And though the goal of Level 4 is to learn to teach Level 2, they will also start observing some Level 3 courses, since the next step is to teach those as well.
The idea of mentoring while being mentored is in full effect by this point. When a Level 4 trainee is teaching a Level 2 class, they are being observed by a Level 5.
Level 4 Fast Facts
Who attends:
A Level 3 graduate who has since taught at least five Level 1 seminars. They must also demonstrate a high level of commitment and be using their Level 3 training effectively. We should see them developing their own teams of Sowers in local churches, guiding the people they’ve trained in Level 1, and working with local Level 2 Sowers.
Who teaches:
Again, this is more like an internship, so there isn’t necessarily one “teacher” the whole time. At times, a Level 4 or Level 5 person might conduct portions of the ministry training. But ultimately, a Level 5 minister certifies the graduate.
How long it takes:
Level 4 can take several months to meet all seven benchmarks.
What they learn:
Students are given three manuals – again translated into the local languages – that explore how to teach, promote, and organize Level 2 seminars. Here are the seven benchmarks to reach Level 4:
- They must be conducting more Level 1 seminars, and teach at least four Level 2 courses under supervision.
- They must continue to lead open air meetings, and have a growing ministry that encourages their students to do the same.
- Expand their influence, and teach Level 1 courses to other churches in the area.
- Demonstrated proficiency in teaching Level 2
- Arrange and manage the logistics of setting up a Level 2 seminar.
- Show that they have opportunity for growth – places in their region, denomination, Bible schools, or other places they will be able to lead more ministry trainings.
- Receive the blessing and commendation of their church to become a Level 4 Sower.
To receive the official Level 4 certificate, a Level 5 Sower will watch them teach a Level 2 seminar. If the Level 5 Sower sees some areas of their instruction that still need growth, the Level 4 will have to teach a couple more before getting certified.
But once certified, the Level 4 can now lead open air evangelism teams and teach both the Level 1 and Level 2 courses. They can establish their own ministry training programs in their area, and begin learning how to teach the Level 3 course.
Level 4 Testimonies
Zambia – Building up the Body of Christ
I did SOWERS Level 1 at a Bible school and was trained at Level 4 in 2014. The SOWERS Program has helped me in many ways. The first one is that it has helped me to know how I can talk to someone on how to receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. The Program has also has helped me to have that desire of speaking the Gospel any time. It has also helped me to teach at Bible School and has also helped my house to be in prayers every day. It has also helped me on how to prepare the Bible Teachings.
From what I have learnt in SOWERS, many people have been encouraged to stand in prayer, to make follow up programmes and preach in the open air. They are also involved in prayers to pray for their sons in Christ. They have also been encouraged to read the Bible.
-Reuben K
Uganda – Strategic Influence
The Level 4 training has created a great impact in my ministry. There has been an improvement in my sermons. When I am preaching at church I apply SOWERS techniques, and am able to present very touching messages.
I have so far organised several teams to form prayer cells and evangelism centres. Now as a Level 4 Sower whenever there is need for strategic planning for Sowers activities, I usually have an input.

The apostle Paul teaches a powerful principle in 2 Timothy. It’s the principle of replication – how we multiply and grow the church.
“The things which you have heard from me through many witnesses, deposit these with faithful people who will be competent to teach others also.”
2 Timothy 2:2
Paul squeezes four spiritual generations in one sentence: himself, Timothy, the people Timothy is discipling, and the ones those people will teach later.
SOWERS method of evangelism training and church planting is built upon this principle. We build and plant for the future, beyond what we ourselves will ever see. The people who produce our fruit may be two or more spiritual generations separated from us.
Level 3 is where this replication begins. Level 3 teaches students how to teach the Level 1 course. So, the things they learned, they are now teaching to others. And when those students reach Level 3, they’ll teach it to others. Just like Paul tells Timothy.
Level 3 Testimony – Revitalized Evangelism
“I was a church leader, but I had reached a dead end concerning taking the ministry of evangelism any further. I am delighted to testify that when I reached Level 3, a great change happened in my life and ministry. I let go of my old approaches and started preaching clear, simple and urgent messages. These days things are different; people flock in my meetings as never before. I have so far taught four Level 1 Seminars and helped in preparing three Level 2 Seminars while continuing with the holding of the open air meetings as well.” -Wilson T, Uganda

Raising up Church Planters
In addition to learning how to teach the Level 1 course, Level 3 students improve and enhance their leadership skills and open air ministry administration.
They work through a Leadership Resource Manual, where they broaden their ‘toolkits’ in open air ministry, gaining new skills they can use when ministering to people and planting churches. Because these students have been part of at least ten open air meetings, by this point they are confident and secure in their ability to be used by God.
Level 3 is where students become church planters.
Level 3 Fast Facts
Who attends:
Any Level 2 graduate who has also completed at least ten open air meetings, and has demonstrated teaching potential by preaching with a sketch board at least twice.
Who teaches:
Level 5 Sowers teach the Level 3 course. Most nations have Level 5 ministers who can teach these courses to their own people, which is always the goal in SOWERS. We want local leaders training local churches. But if one can’t be found, such as in a nation we haven’t been working in as long, then a Regional Director, or Level 5 appointed by one, can be brought in. All the East African nations have several Level 5 ministers.
How long it takes:
About 2 – 3 days, depending on the abilities of the students.
What they learn:
The hands on approach continues, along with the Leadership Resource Manual translated into the local language to build up skills. This course also sees more experience-based discussions about their open air meetings.
-
Review and Improve Open Air Ministry
After each open air meeting, the Level 2 leaders write reports. This part of the Level 3 course involves looking over those reports, discussing what went well and what didn’t, and talking about ways to improve their methods. This part is a coaching/mentoring style of teaching.
-
Enhancing Team Leadership Skills
The Manual explores numerous ways to build the church, essential elements for church planters. These topics include:
- Motivating your church to want to do evangelism
- Starting and running prayer cells
- Additional forms of presentation, such as interview testimonies, mini-dramas, and object lessons
- New sketch board sermons to use at future open air meetings
-
Hands-on Training to Teach Level 1
The heart of the Level 3 course, here students learn how to instruct on all the principles and methods of the Level 1 course, including how to help the Level 1 students walk people through the booklet.
After completing the Level 3 Training, these leaders can train new leaders, preach at open air meetings, lead evangelism teams, and plant churches. They are equipped to spread the gospel to new places.
Level 3 Testimonies
Zambia – Partnered for God
I started the SOWERS Program in 2002 this is when I did Level 1. In SOWERS I have known how to preach the Gospel to people and how to plant churches. SOWERS has also helped me and my wife to know how to do God’s work as a couple. In 2014 I did my Level 3 and I am still working as a Sower. I have helped many people. I want to work extra hard in the future.
I have taught many people and they are also working and have started bringing people to Christ.
-Paul M.
Uganda – Boldly and Gently Proclaiming
Before I joined the SOWERS Program, I was young spiritually and I could not even speak to a crowd of people. I was shy, fearful and I could not even give my testimony in the church. Since I was trained in the SOWERS Program, I have grown spiritually, I can teach the word of God, I know how to counsel a person and how to give my testimony.
I am able to participate in all parts of an open air meeting. I know how to counsel back-sliders and how to follow up new Christians. I would encourage anybody to join the SOWERS Program because of the way it has transformed my life and ministry.

Jesus never intended that church leaders should do everything.
The heart of the church is leadership development. In Ephesians 4:12, Paul makes this clear when he tells us what church leaders are supposed to do:
“…for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ.”
Level 2 is all about leadership development. It trains students to lead open air meetings, from planning to presentation to the invitation to accept Christ to the follow-up strategy. All through the SOWERS program, you’ll notice the constant emphasis on training others while you’re learning at the same time.
In almost every Level, the same person training others is also being trained themselves. We call this a “Progressive Training Model” for this reason.
Level 2 Testimony – Continuous Church Growth
“I praise the Lord for the SOWERS seminars. Our ministry here is growing more through the SOWERS open airs. Every Sunday we have five to ten newcomers.” -A L2 graduate from The Philippines
(See more Level 2 testimonials at the end of this page. Or, go here to see testimonies from all 5 levels)
Becoming a Minister
Level 2 is ideal for anyone who works at any level of leadership in a church, and for anyone who aspires to lead a ministry team. This could include strong and mature church members, Bible study leaders, youth ministers, men or women. In a SOWERS-led church, it’s anyone who has completed Level 1.
Running a successful open air meeting takes a lot of planning. You can see the 8 parts of a typical meeting here. Depending on the location, permits might be necessary. This course covers practical tasks such as preparing sketch board materials, planning who will share a testimony, music or drama presentation, and the actual preaching.
Using a hands-on workshop based approach, students in Level 2 get to practice preaching to each other, as well as preparing sketch boards. They also learn how to share their testimonies in 3 minutes. This is a vital skill that more churches all over the world need to emphasize. We should always be ready to give an answer for the hope that is in us. That means we need to know what God has done for us, and be able to tell someone quickly and with clarity.
A good testimony has 3 parts:
- Your life before God – make it clear how lost you were, but don’t dwell too long here
- How you encountered God – what led you to respond
- Your life after you chose to follow him – what is different now
In a good testimony, God is the hero. Not our intellect, or our emotions, or our family influence. What did God save us from, and what has he empowered us to do?
Level 2 Fast Facts
Who attends:
Level 1 graduates who want to have greater impact in the world for the gospel. Ideally they should demonstrate some level of maturity. If there were ever any doubt, a church leader would be consulted first.
Who teaches:
Level 4 graduates, or anyone above that. And the Level 4 instructor is encouraged to bring along a Level 3 so they can learn how to teach this course. It’s our constant cycle of teaching and training, both at the same time at all Levels.
How long it takes:
About 30 hours, usually spread over 3 or 4 days, depending on how much time is spent building relationships and eating together. Sometimes Level 1 and 2 are combined, which takes about 5 days.
What they learn:
There’s a strong dose of both classroom-style instruction and hands-on practice in Level 2. The course covers one main topic – how to lead open air meetings. But it also provides scriptural inspiration for “sowing” the gospel, and some history of open air preaching.
-
How to lead open air meetings
- Team leadership, planning future meetings, permit applications, working with a team
- Presentation skills – how to preach with paint and brushes, 3 kinds of lettering and different figures they can draw, eye contact and body language, organizing materials, dealing with drunkards or other unruly bystanders
- How to give your testimony in 3 minutes
- How to present a call to God – invitation to repent and follow Jesus
- Strategies for gathering people to listen – how to build interest and concern
-
History and Bible teaching
- How to “plant well,” using the parable of the sower in Luke 8. Each day begins with an inspiring message about the parable and the seed.
- Early history of various open air preachers such as George Whitfield, John Wesley, William Booth, John Sung
- How to sow fruitfully, using Ecclesiastes 11:1-6
As with all the Levels, the written materials are translated into local languages, and when possible, taught by local leaders.
After the workshop, the graduates go out and run the next open air meeting, ideally with two or three Level 2’s working together this first time. Afterward, they return and debrief, and looks for ways to improve the next one.
Finally, this Level has an end-of-course exam covering the main principles of open air evangelism. To pass, they must score 75%. Failure to pass does not mean they can’t lead open air ministry teams, but it does mean they cannot move on to Level 3.
Then, they evaluate the course. Some of those evaluations are below, along with other stories from the harvest field after people took the Level 2 course.
Level 2 Testimonies
Pastor Ram of Nepal had been searching for a satisfactory method of evangelism. After being trained to Level 2 in 2007, he found the SOWERS Program the best approach for rural evangelism. After his team had done seven meetings, 160 new people started attending his church and 40 were baptized.
Here are some other Level 2 testimonies:
Philippines – From Soldier to Soul-Winner
N. was a soldier in the New People's Army (NPA), a feared revolutionary group in the Philippines. On one of his excursions, he came across an open air meeting in action. He was captivated by what he saw and heard and at the end of the meeting, was counseled for salvation.
His aunt was a member of an evangelical church where a L1 &2 seminar was planned, so she paid for N to go to this seminar. Though he didn't want to do the course – especially the sketch board workshop – (he hated art and at school had never done his own artwork for homework, but always got someone else to do it for him) he found that he was able to master the simple skills that were taught.
He went out with the team, saw souls saved and became one of the best open air preachers we have in the Philippines. His wife comments 'His passion is SOWERS'. Today he is a SOWERS full-time worker, being sponsored by people in his own country. He is a real enthusiastic trainer and promoter of the SI Program.
Zambia – Fearless Replication
I started my SOWERS Program in 2001. In 2007 I did Level 2. Since then, I have been helped by the SOWERS Program in many ways such as knowing how to preach the Gospel to the lost. Teachings from SOWERS have removed fear in me. I have learnt many ways of preaching the gospel.
Many who I have brought to know Jesus Christ have shown interest to do the SOWERS Program so that they can start leading people to Christ.
-Lazarus M
Philippines – The Key to Breakthrough
“I started planting churches when I was 25 years old, a few years after my graduation from a Bible School. I thought I knew everything about church-planting since I love evangelism and keep doing it. I really did hard work and exerted much effort on it, resulting in fatigue and burnout. I found no reasonable outcome for my endeavor.
In fact, I spent six years in the first church I planted and six years again in the second. I felt helpless and hopeless in my evangelistic ministry. I thought, “Lord may be I am not called for this.”
An answer to my wordless prayer came through John and Winsome, missionaries with SOWERS International. They conducted Level 1 and 2 seminars in our area. I was so impressed with the result of our first open air meeting and I was converted to become an open air preacher.
I went to places that didn't have churches yet and was able to organize more without the feeling of uncertainty, burnout, etc.
At the moment, I am thinking also of training churches around the area who are just maintaining their numbers and just waiting for people to come in. I am praying to offer SOWERS training free so that others can witness the effective results of going out to sow through the SOWERS Program.” -Norsie L, 2014
Nepal – Expanded Vision
“Actually, I am challenged to evangelizing to people through sketchboard. I would like to use this seminar among youth and students... Specially I would like to recommend to local churches and daughter churches”
Philippines – Most Efficient Use of Funds
“I have seen the easiest way in evangelism … the SOWERS open air meeting is the most effective and only a little amount of money was spent compared to other ways of evangelism. It is the easiest way of drawing a crowd.”
Kenya – Inspiring the Local Church
I did Level 1 training in 2014 and Level 2 in 2015. Through the training I have benefited in the following ways.
- As a Team leader, I am able to plan an open air meeting using proper programming
- I have learnt the use of the sketch board to prepare the introductory sketches and sermons for open air meetings.
- I have gained skills to lead people to Christ using the counselling booklet.
- Evangelism has become easier in our Church and we have started home cells in two locations.
I have gained confidence and now I am able to go out to open air meetings. I look forward to being trained at higher Levels of the Program so I can train others also in Kenya.

Want a quick overview of all 5 Levels?
Sharing the gospel and making disciples is the fundamental calling on every Christian.
Matthew 28 tells us clearly to do four things:
- Go into the world
- Make disciples of people from all nations
- Baptize them
- Teach them to follow the commands of God.
When God lights someone’s fire and they want to tell others about Jesus, they still need to learn how to do it well. Even long-time Christians sometimes have no clue how to share their faith. So, whether brand new believers or people who’ve been Christians for years, Level 1 is about how to share your faith, specifically in the context of open air meetings.
Level 1 Testimony – Fruit, not Argument
My training at Level 1 has made me to become very relevant to the unbelievers in delivering the Gospel message to them. My use of the counselling booklets has saved me from the bitter arguments and abuses I used to get when counselling people. At least 3 people of those I have counselled, have already become active members of our church. -Karamagi D – Uganda
(See more Level 1 testimonials at the end of this page. Or, go here to see testimonies from all 5 levels)
Illiteracy – Not a Barrier
The nations where SOWERS operates often have high rates of illiteracy, sometimes approaching 50% like in Malawi. But that’s not a hindrance to Level 1 – you can lead people to Christ even if you can’t read.
This is possible because of the “Big Question” booklet that SOWERS has developed for open air meetings, which uses visuals such as the “bridge illustration” to show people how sin has separated us from God, and how Jesus bridges the gap.
Level 1 teaches people how to use the booklet to lead people to salvation after they’ve heard a message preached by someone from Level 2 or higher at an open air meeting. They learn to pray with people, to answer questions, and to counsel them in basic spiritual truth. If the person they’re counseling has greater needs, then they pass them to someone with more training.
You can’t make disciples standing in front of a crowd. That happens one on one. Level 1 initiates the discipleship process for new believers.
Level 1 Fast Facts
Who attends:
New Christians, local church members who want to learn how to share the gospel.
Who teaches:
Level 3 graduates, or anyone above that.
How long it takes:
10-12 hours, usually spread over 2 or 3 days. Sometimes Level 1 is followed immediately by Level 2, in which case it takes longer.
What they learn:
Level 1 teaches five aspects of sharing the gospel at open air meetings. These focus on character, practical issues, and working with new believers. Here are the five components of the course:
-
How to be used by God
This is a 4-part message meant to build godly character, which is vital if someone wants to be an effective minister. It teaches:
- Being clean (purity in behavior)
- Being one (unity within the church among believers, even different denominations)
- Being filled with the Spirit – learning it’s God’s power, and not ours, that does the work in other people’s hearts
- Prayer – how to pray for others and for yourself
-
Leading someone to Christ
After every open air meeting, many people will respond to the message. This is why SOWERS-based evangelism always happens in teams. This part of the course teaches how to approach people who want to learn more about Jesus, and how to lead them through the booklet.
-
Behavior in open air meetings
This is the most practical session, dealing with how to behave during the outreach. This includes things like body language, how to stand, eye contact, listening well, working with your team, and how to use musicians and testimonies.
Open air meetings are not what some Western Christians might think at first – these are not raving street preachers shouting at passersby. They are well-planned, respectfully presented outreaches with specific strategies and guidelines for the team.
-
Counseling
Using the booklet is one thing, but when you have a real person in front of you, unexpected things will happen. People have needs. Questions. Doubts. Fears. This part of the course teaches basic spiritual counseling – how to answer fundamental questions about sin, God, repentance, and how to work with people where they are.
-
Basic spiritual parenting
Open air meetings initiate, but discipleship demands follow-up. This section teaches how to do inductive Bible studies so they can work with the new believers in the months afterward. Inductive studies do not need manuals or pre-written guides – it’s just how to read and study the Bible, and how to apply it to your life.
With this skill, Level 1 graduates will grow in their own faith as well as be able to lead others. This course equips them to follow up and nurture new Christians until they become mature in their faith. This also means plugging them in to the local church.
At the end of this section, students sign a commitment to be spiritual parents to anyone they lead to Christ at an open air meeting. This is between them and God – it is not something the teacher checks.
A huge page of Level 1 is the Open Air Meeting which is conducted by the teacher. The students put into practice what they learned in the Level 1 sessions. After the meeting they help counsel the people who respond.
Level 1 Testimonies
Philippines: The Children Shall Lead
While in the Philippines, we were invited to a church in a very poor area to help with an L1 seminar, while mentoring a L3 trainer.
During lunch, a boy of 12 who had been brought along to church by his Christian friend was counseled for salvation. He then stayed and participated in the L1 seminar. At the demonstration open air meeting, these two boys bravely found other boys their own age at the end of the meeting and both counseled others for salvation.
The adults in the group were rather shy at putting into practice what they had learned, but at the example of these two boys, they too, counseled others. They went out fearful, but all came home rejoicing.

Kenya – Making Eternal Disciples
SOWERS has taught me how to lead people to eternal life from eternal death and how to care for new believers. This has given me the zeal to follow-up our members to help them grow. My group has been so transformed spiritually and we thank the Lord for the SOWERS Program for reaching many with the word of life.

Zambia: Growing in Faith
I did Level 1 in 2006. Since then my talk time with God has increased and my time of reading the Word of God has doubled. And I have known more of the devil’s schemes in destroying the work of God. I also have known more on how to lead a person to Christ. Many people’s lives have changed for the better since they came in contact with me.
